Adsideo - "To come along side of, to be with, to understand"

History

In the spring of 2007, four students, along with Mr. Derrick, began meeting on a weekly basis to continue a conversation focusing on social justice issues occurring locally, regionally and globally.  Today, the weekly gathering continues with several more students and teachers  engaging in what it means to become a community of Adsideo.

Each Wednesday at 6:30 am, everyone is welcome to join this on-going effort.  Doughnuts and juice are provided along with opportunities to become more engaged in transforming our culture by becoming aware and enlightened to a variety of issues.

Objectives

The goal of Adsideo is to develop five habits of the mind .  These habits are essential components of those who have committed their lives to their communities.  These five habits are:

        1.  Habit of dialogue – grounded in the understanding that meaning is constructed through an ongoing interaction between oneself and others.

         2.  Habit of interpersonal perspective-taking – the ability to see through the eyes and respond to the feelings and concerns of the other.

        3.  Habit of critical, systemic thought – the capacity to identify parts and the connections among them as coherent patterns, and to reflect evaluatively on them.

        4.  Habit of dialectical thought – the ability to recognize and work effectively with contradictions by resisting closure or by reframing one’s response.

        5.  Habit of holistic thought – the ability to intuit life as an interconnected whole in a way that leads to practical wisdom.

These habits reflect a student who has developed thought patterns capable of making meaning out of difficult situations and complex systems in our society.  The closer we are to helping our students obtain these goals, it is our belief that our students are better prepared for participation in the societies of our communities, nation and world.

Funding

A service learning grant was written to secure funding for activities associated with the student effort.  The funding came from the Idaho State Learn and Serve Grant.
