Benchmarks are what Lakeland students must know absolutely.  They are drawn from Lakeland and State curriculum standards.

  

READING PROCESS

 

1.                    Identify and name colors (blue, red, yellow, green, orange, purple, black, brown, gray, pink, white)

2.                    Recite letters of alphabet in order

3.                    Identify and name letters in own name

4.                    Identify their own name in print

5.                    Identify color and number words

6.                    Understand position words

7.                    Identify patterns

8.                    Prior to reading, preview illustrations and opening pages of a text, title page, and table of contents

9.                    Locate resources for finding words in the classroom-word wall, charts

10.                 Use the computer and software to acquire, reinforce and enhance reading concepts

 

CONCEPTS ABOUT PRINT

             

1.                    Hold a book right side up and turn pages in correct direction              

2.                    Identify front cover, back cover and title of book

3.                    Track or follow print when listening to a familiar text being read

4.                    Follow  words from left to right and from top to bottom on the printed page

5.                    Show  the one to one correspondence between a spoken word and a printed word  

6.                    Identifies the difference between a letter, word and sentence

7.                    Recognize the concepts of letters, words, and sentences by segmenting spoken and print sentences into individual words

8.                    Show  that print represents spoken language and conveys meaning

 

PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS/DECODING

 

1.                    Identify spoken words that rhyme

2.                    Orally produce rhyming words in response to spoken words

3.                    Orally produce groups of words that begin with the same initial sounds

4.                    Identify the number of syllables in a word

5.                    Identify the initial and final sounds (not the letter) of a spoken word

REFERENCE AND LIBRARY SKILLS CURRICULUM

 

The reference and library skills curriculum is to be taught by both classroom teachers and the district media specialist.  However there are some objectives which are specific to library usage.

 

 

1.         Organization of materials

A.         Know that materials in the library media center have a specific order

B.         Develop an understanding of own part in keeping materials in order

2.         Evaluation and Selection Techniques

A.         Know that the library media center has books to borrow and use

B.         Know that many children of all ages use the library media center

C.         Choose a book to borrow with assistance from the teacher or library personnel

D.         Take proper care of books borrowed

E.         Follow circulation procedures (knows how to check out a book)

3.         Listening and Viewing Skills

A.         Develop the ability to attend to the sights and sounds of storytelling

B.         Develop the ability to respond to what is seen and heard

4.         Literature Appreciation

A.         Know there are many storybooks and picture books in the library media center

B.         Have some favorite books and main characters

 

WRITING PROCESS

 

1.                    Participate in generating ideas using prewriting strategies

2.                    Draw a picture about a story idea generated through discussion

3.                    Use ideas generated in prewriting to write a class draft

4.                    Publish and illustrate draft with assistance

5.                    Share writing with intended audience

 

WRITING APPLICATIONS

 

1.                    Participate in creating narratives by dictating, drawing, or writing

2.                    Participate in creating simple rhymes, poems or songs

WRITING COMPONENTS

                2.             Copy upper and lower case letters of the alphabet legibly

        5.             Use capital letter in first name and last name

        6.             Write words legibly within a line

        7.             Use invented spelling to spell independently

                8.             Write left to right, top to bottom, with appropriate spaces between words

                9.             Apply rules for grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling

COMMUNICATION

            maintaining attention to speaker
